College 101
College 101 Because Rachel is still undecided about her major, she will also mention a few classes sheâs excited about in subjects other than history. But first, she needs to brainstorm topics for the supplemental essays to make sure no topics overlap. She will try to fit this research in while traveling. She will start the essay with a snapshot of a childrenâs Halloween party that she and other embassy teens organized, then discuss being a volunteer monitor for an online local TCK community. Sheâll end with her plan to forge new bonds with other international kids, mentioning specific clubs or houses at each university. Barnard wants 250 words, and sheâll expand the essay for Michigan. Could she tweak some of her Catch-22 essay to write about humor under pressure? Sheâd have to use examples that show this trait, rather than simply insist sheâs funny, which isnât effective. In about 10 days, Rachel is done with her main essay. Because she was enthusiastic about the topic and created a structure before starting to write, it wasnât as difficult as sheâd anticipated. Students donât need to stick to the 5-paragraph model that theyâve used so often in school. You can have a good essay that has 2 or 10 paragraphs, or includes a good amount of dialogue. DONâT rehash information that is already in your application. The goal of your essay should not be something like âto show Iâm co-captain of the soccer team.â They already know that; you need to tell them something new. This may be your only chance to address an admissions officer directly. I'm a playwright, editor, and writing teacher with a focus on arts education. I got my MFA at UT Austin as a Michener Fellow, a program for young writers that accepts less than one percent of applicants. Prompt connects students with a team of professional playwrights, authors, journalists, and educators who are only available through our network. Students applying to highly competitive universities (Ivy and Ivy-equivalent) face tough competition. Compelling essays will help you distinguish yourself. Students sign up with Prompt and start with a strategy session to figure out what they can still do to improve their experiences for their essays. Sign up now and we guarantee you'll finish all of your essays by mid-September so you can focus on academics and activities during senior year. We asked the admission staff to select some of their favorite essays. We hope they will provide inspiration as you craft your stories. Perhaps most important, this is an essay Rachel canât wait to write. She decides against the âgetting lostâ story, as it happened when she was 8; although if she could find a metaphoric connection with feeling lost and found when moving to different countries, it could work. Likewise, she was 10 years old when Maroon Five came to the Dominican Republic, where her dad was the cultural attaché. The storyâs tone feels too âprivileged,â with no real lesson learned; and colleges prefer more recent experiences anyway. Get a jump start on a critical part of the college application process. Theyâre going to turn down lots of highly qualified applicants, so your essay could be critical if the choice comes down to you and another, similarly qualified applicant. That said, your essay probably wonât actually hurt you as long as itâs reasonably literate . Rachelâs sense of humor is her signature; like her favorite character Yossarian, she sees absurdity in everything. Although they're phrased differently from college to college, certain essay question types appear routinely. Since 2016, I have worked as a high school English tutor, theatre educator, and freelance journalist. I graduated summa cum laude from Northwestern University's theatre and creative writing programs. Rachel, a devoted dog-lover, has volunteered at rescue organizations in three different countries, andâ"surprise, surpriseâ"the family has ended up adopting three dogs. Rachel could write the story of adopting each dog and how important volunteering was to her, while throwing in colorful details that illustrate her familiarity with each country. Rachel now realizes she should do more research on her colleges. She will need to find specific classes to cite, professors sheâs familiar with, and extracurriculars she will take part in.
